Myro, the Smallest Plane in the World

The man behind the Myro stories is Nick Rose, an entrepreneur from Bournemouth, Dorset.

His passion for aviation began when, at the age of 8, he tape-recorded aeroplanes flying over his house and made a ‘history of flight’ documentary for school.

Nick had his first chance to fly when, as a trainee engineer for a local radio station, he would hitch rides with the station’s “Skyway Patrol” aeroplane.

Nick dreamed to become a pilot, and attracted by the freedom of small planes in wide open spaces, was determined to fly a microlight in the Southern Hemisphere.

But first he would follow a career in engineering, spurred on by his success in 1987’s Young Engineer’s for Great Britain competition and 1988’s International Science and Engineering Fair.

Moving from his home in Buckinghamshire to Dorset, Nick studied manufacturing and business at university, where in the last year he started his first company from his bedroom. Today, Teletest Ltd designs, manufactures and exports HDTV and 3DTV equipment to TV studios around the World.

Nick’s flying dreams finally came true when, in 2004, a friend invited him to a wedding in Australia. Nick found a discarded aviation magazine advertising microlight lessons and four days later, he was flying solo! Nick and other microlight pilots then made the flight of a lifetime up Australia’s East Coast to the famous Byron Bay, and it was during this trip the seeds of Myro were sown.

One night, Nick wrote a short story for his three year old Godson, called “Mickey the Microlight”, identifying the ‘market opportunity’ for a series of quality children’s picture books about aeroplanes.

So with the help of a dozen freelancers and seven years of production, these seeds grew into Myro, the Smallest Plane in the World. All stories are based on the real places Nick visited, the people he met and the adventures he had during three years of research whilst flying his Microlight in Australia.

As publishers wouldn’t meet with Nick to discuss the project, he invested every penny and spare moment he had into self publishing the first six Myro books and the CD of songs.

Nick says, “The Myro series is influenced by the 1950’s ‘Eagle Annuals’, the 1960’s ‘Thunderbirds’ TV shows and the detailed books of Richard Scarry. Every Myro story is an adventure where the little plane either gets into a scrape or comes to the rescue! We have tried to create a series of books that appealed to both parents and children, based on contemporary activities and issues.

“I’ve loved creating the series with the incredibly talented freelancers. The project is great fun and it’s been very rewarding to see the books and songs develop from ideas.

“I’m looking forward to starting the next Myro projects, including an animation series and a stage play, performed by a touring theatre company.”

Nick has many other Myro stories and songs whirring around in his head – but you’ll have to wait for the next series to see what new adventures and situations our heroic little plane gets into!

There Myro has to win the friendship and confidence of his new hangar-mates: a gyrocopter, a helicopter and a Cessna light aircraft. They are wary, but Myro’s size and speed enables him to carry out a daring rescue on a remote farm, and help deliver a lamb.

Soon he’s the toast of the airfield – even though he’s covered in cow-pats from the bumpy landing in the cow paddock!

125 words
Myro, the Smallest Plane in the World, is settling in to his new home in Australia but it’s a day hotter than anything he’s known before. His pilot and the farmer are fishing at the cool billabong when Myro hears the frantic stampede of animals from the bush … a fire is raging, and it’s coming closer!

Two ultralight aeroplanes are trapped in their hangar and Myro can’t get any response to his MAYDAY call. His only choice is to fly without his pilot until he gets a signal.
The brave little plane takes off through the thick black smoke to call the control tower, and an emergency team is scrambled to the rescue.

Myro might have broken the rules to fly a

Resurrection

Resurrection
Resurrection: a poem by Nick Owen

I have woken, warm this morning
Slowly drawn to your caress
My sleepy hand glides outwards
On your silk pyjama dress
Your fingers slip
Below my hair
To touch my nakedness

God and Goddess
Maid and master
Tangled limbs in vital spark
Celebrate creation
Life
In Over Norton Park

The world outside my window
Turns a wondrous green and gold
Yellow light on beech leaves
The meadow simply glows

There are thorns on these red roses
Which shine so round, so bright
Like blobs of blood
On punctured fingers
But the pain of love’s all right

The sun sends emissaries
Rays expanding, small and slight
Barely breaking through leaf blanket
Holding on to darkness
Of the sweet soft night

Love builds up to a crescendo
Wave on wave
Upon our shore
Crashing through the firmament
Till flesh can take no more

I fall into the nigredo
While the light expands the day
Beyond the little dying
There’s a world where I can stay
Rekindling my love for you
While you’re away

Like the cycle of the seasons
Like the round of dark and light
Like the rhythm of creation
This stuff makes the world come right

Bedrooms
Bedrooms is an evocative drama about the walls that separate people, the heartbreak and infidelity that are often the result and the redemption that is possible when we choose to speak the truth and tear those walls down. A unique collaboration among a collective of independent filmmakers, Bedrooms is told in four distinct stories set in four bedrooms. In one story, Moon Bloodgood ( Terminator Salvation ) and Jordan Belfi ( Entourage ) play a husband and wife at the critical turning point of their young relationship. In another, Julie Benz ( Dexter ) and Xander Berkeley ( Terminator 2: Judgment Day ) are a husband and wife desperately trying to recover from infidelity, while Jesse Garcia ( Quinceanera ) plays a pizza delivery boy who unwittingly becomes the catalyst for the ultimate resolution of their marital conflict. In the third story, Dee Wallace ( E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial ) and Barry Bostwick ( Spin City ) play a retired couple coming to the end of a long and unusual extra-marital affair. And in the last story, Sarah Clarke ( Twilight ) plays a recently divorced mother of ten year old twins who decide to create their own separate spaces in the room they share by building a wall out of all their toys. Bedrooms is a comic, sweet and gut wrenching exploration of human relationships, their myriad complications and the daily choice we face to either make them work or to move on.
